OMG! This is the cabinet that I took the singer machine out of only it was all painted and repainted. I had no idea what would be underneath!!! Now I want to go back and get it! I think I will. Thank thank you so much!
Is there a trick to opening the leaves in order to get to the sewing machine? I recently inherited my mother’s No. 42 cabinet with Singer 15-91 inside, but cannot get the top of the cabinet opened. Is there a latch that must be released?
I’ve never seen a latch on this style of cabinet, the two halves do have a half-round tongue and groove that locks together. There are cutouts in the back to get some grip on the leaves, but they should just fold out resisted only by their own weight. I’d guess if it’s stuck there’s some kind of fastener or adhesive, degraded shellac, or other crud holding it closed.
I have a Singer #40 cabinet but cannot get the swing (support) arm to automatically come out, (I received the cabinet in pieces). Is there a pin on the cabinet hinge that needs to be in place. I have one on the machine side with only a hole on the left side of the hinge, does this have anything to do with the automatic release (I have one extra pin! )
Yes, there are a pair of spring-loaded pins that go in the extra holes in the rear hinge that control the auto swing-out.
The short one goes in the leaf, and it locks/releases the long on that goes through the cabinet into the swing-arm.

Look at my post here https://pappp.net/?p=1370 for the details of how they go together.
