Hi, I recently inherited my grandmother’s Singer 201-2 sewing machine. It pretty much looked like this one. The ‘crispy’ rubber covering the electric wires is not safe. I have cleaned as much of this as I know how to do. I have taken apart the bobbin case, the feed dog and the light socket area. I am not afraid of cleaning and/or taking apart this machine. I am not afraid of electric wiring either. However, to properly relubricate the machine I am not so excited about. Should I take the machine into a repair shop and pay the $$ to have it done or try it myself. Where would I purchase the electric wiring, cord, lubricant to replace the worn out ones. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I really want to start sewing with this machine. I am so excited!
I found de- and re- lubing the machine to be one of the easier parts of refurbishing, and working on the machine to be extremely satisfying, as well as edifying in terms of getting an intuition for how it will behave when running. If you feel up to it, I absolutely encourage you to DIY.
