(credit: Al Drago\/Bloomberg via Getty Images)<\/p>  <\/figure><div><a name=\"page-1\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Iowa's Democratic Party turned to an untested software platform tied to a mobile application to streamline reporting from its presidential caucuses last night. <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2020\/02\/technology-glitches-prevent-same-night-release-of-iowa-caucus-results\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">What could possibly go wrong<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>In a collapse that echoed the failure of a <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2012\/11\/inside-team-romneys-whale-of-an-it-meltdown\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">canvassing application used by Sen. Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential bid<\/a>, the caucus reporting app repeatedly hung as precinct leaders attempted to submit returns. A backup hotline was jammed for hours. And as of the morning after the caucuses, the full results are still not tallied.
