{"id":95081,"date":"2025-06-27T13:38:25","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T17:38:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pappp.net\/?p=95081"},"modified":"2025-06-27T13:38:25","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T17:38:25","slug":"other-networks-a-radical-technology-sourcebook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pappp.net\/?p=95081","title":{"rendered":"Other Networks: A Radical Technology Sourcebook"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><br \/>The only books I buy new anymore are beautiful things that appeal to my niche interests, which might become unavailable because they are niche&#8230; so my pre-ordered copy of Lori Emerson&#8217;s new book<em> Other Networks: A Radical Technology Sourcebook<\/em> arrived today.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"703\" height=\"937\" src=\"https:\/\/pappp.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/OtherNetworksFront.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-95082\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pappp.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/OtherNetworksFront.jpg 703w, https:\/\/pappp.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/OtherNetworksFront-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 703px) 100vw, 703px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lori Emerson is one of the few people really prominently writing seriously in a media studies\/anthropological sort of way about the history of technology, and I constantly assert that there isn&#8217;t enough of that, so I&#8217;m excited to see a win.   <br \/><br \/>I found her via the press for her first book, <em>Reading Writing Interfaces<\/em>, which is fabulous and thought provoking (and I only have a handful of quibbles with it, mostly around promulgating some of Apple&#8217;s dubious self-centering history that they seeded to writers and journalists in the 90s, even where she clearly knows better) and have followed her online posts as she prepared this one &#8211; We even interacted online once or twice in those; I&#8217;m acknowledged in her piece <a href=\"https:\/\/loriemerson.net\/2021\/08\/14\/the-net-has-never-been-neutral\/\">The Net Has Never Been Neutral<\/a> that didn&#8217;t end up in the book because of a conversation we had online about how different parts of the audience would understand the world &#8220;Neutral&#8221; in subtly and problematically different ways when she posted an earlier version. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a skim, <em>Other Networks<\/em> is much less densely academic and analytical than <em>Reading Writing Interfaces<\/em>; it really is a sourcebook of curated examples of technologies and instances of those technologies, with the necessary breadcrumbs to set up the interesting properties and comparisons with others.  I&#8217;m a little disappointed that some of the deep musings about other ways the thing that is the Internet could have been largely didn&#8217;t make it in to the book, but, from an editorial view, they are different content for a different audience than what it ended up being. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"932\" src=\"https:\/\/pappp.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/OtherNetworksBack-1024x932.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-95083\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pappp.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/OtherNetworksBack-1024x932.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pappp.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/OtherNetworksBack-300x273.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pappp.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/OtherNetworksBack-768x699.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pappp.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/OtherNetworksBack.jpg 1029w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br \/>It is also <em>beautiful<\/em>; the binding and the typesetting and the illustrations, right down to this lovely little foiled glyph on the back cover.
