(credit: Bambu Lab)<\/p>  <\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div><a name=\"page-1\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>A patent lawsuit filed by one of 3D printing's most established firms against a consumer-focused upstart could have a big impact on the wider 3D-printing scene.<\/p>\n<p>In two complaints, (<a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.txed.232140\/gov.uscourts.txed.232140.1.0.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/insight.rpxcorp.com\/litigation_documents\/15797606\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2<\/a>, PDF) filed in <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2015\/08\/why-patent-trolls-go-to-east-texas-explained\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Eastern District of Texas<\/a>, Marshall Division, against six entities related to Bambu Lab, Stratasys alleges that Bambu Lab infringed upon 10 patents that it owns, some through subsidiaries like Makerbot (<a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2013\/06\/old-school-3d-printing-firm-buys-a-hot-little-startup-makerbot-for-403m\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">acquired in 2013<\/a>). Among the patents cited are <a href=\"https:\/\/patents.google.com\/patent\/US9421713B2\/en\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">US9421713B2<\/a>, \"Additive manufacturing method for printing three-dimensional parts with purge towers,\" and <a href=\"https:\/\/patents.google.com\/patent\/US9592660B2\/en\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">US9592660B2<\/a>, \"Heated build platform and system for three-dimensional printing methods.\"<\/p>\n<p>There are not many, if any, 3D printers sold to consumers that do not have a heated bed, which prevents the first layers of a model from cooling during printing and potentially shrinking and warping the model. \"Purge towers\" (or \"<a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.bambulab.com\/en\/software\/bambu-studio\/parameter\/prime-tower\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prime towers<\/a>\" in Bambu's parlance) allow for multicolor printing by providing a place for the filament remaining in a nozzle to be extracted and prevent bleed-over between colors.
