(credit: <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zynga.com\/\">Zynga<\/a>)<\/p>  <\/figure><div><a name=\"page-1\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Major console game publisher Take-Two has acquired social and mobile gaming giant Zynga for a whopping $12.7 billion in cash and stock, making the deal the largest acquisition of a single gaming company in history.<\/p>\n<p>That might seem like a ludicrous price if your familiarity with Zynga is limited to <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2020\/09\/zynga-is-finally-axing-the-original-farmville-after-11-years\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>FarmVille<\/em><\/a>, <em>CityVille<\/em>, and other Zynga games that came to dominate the \"social gaming\" fad of the early 2010s (and led to the creation of <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2011\/02\/farmville-for-dummies-coming-soon-to-a-bookstore-near-you\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some excellent books<\/a>, if I do say so myself). But while the original <em>FarmVille<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2020\/09\/zynga-is-finally-axing-the-original-farmville-after-11-years\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">merely limped along until 2010<\/a>, Zynga has successfully transitioned into a casual mobile gaming powerhouse by spending billions of dollars on acquisitions like <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.zynga.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/zynga-acquires-leading-global-mobile-game-developer-gram-games\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gram Games<\/a> (<em>1010<\/em>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.zynga.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/zynga-enters-agreement-acquire-small-giant-games-creator-hit\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Small Giant Games<\/a> (<em>Empire &amp; Puzzles<\/em>) in 2018, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.zynga.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/zynga-enters-agreement-acquire-istanbul-based-peak-creator-top\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peak Games<\/a> (<em>Toon Blast<\/em>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.zynga.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/zynga-closes-acquisition-istanbul-based-rollic-leader-fast\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rollic<\/a> (<em>Go Knots 3D<\/em>) in 2020.
