Oddly, that wasn't as closely decided as everyone had reason to fear it would be.\r\nAnd it provides a handy tool to separate the textualists from the shameless bigots.<\/div><p><img src=\"https:\/\/images.theweek.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/tw_image_6_4\/public\/gettyimages-1220207749.jpg?itok=7LTja2EI\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"\/><\/p> <p>The Supreme Court has just issued a huge decision on LGBTQ rights.<\/p>\n<p>The court on Monday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/supreme-court\/supreme-court-rules-existing-civil-rights-law-protects-gay-lesbian-n1231018\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ruled<\/a> in a 6-3 decision that it's illegal under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to discriminate against workers for being gay or transgender. \"In Title VII, Congress adopted broad language making it illegal for an employer to rely on an employee's sex when deciding to fire that employee,\" <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/19pdf\/17-1618_hfci.pdf\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jusice Neil Gorsuch wrote in the majority opinion<\/a>. \"We do not hesitate to recognize today a necessary consequence of that legislative choice: An employer who fires an individual merely for being gay or transgender defies the law.\"<\/p>\n<p>Justice Gorsuch also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/courts_law\/supreme-court-says-gay-transgender-workers-are-protected-by-federal-law-forbidding-discrimination-on-the-basis-of-sex\/2020\/06\/15\/2211d5a4-655b-11ea-acca-80c22bbee96f_story.html\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a> that when it comes to the question of \"whether an employer can fire someone simply for being homosexual or transgender,\" the \"answer is clear.\" Chief Justice John Roberts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/06\/15\/politics\/supreme-court-lgbtq-employment-case\/index.html\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">joined <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/06\/15\/politics\/supreme-court-lgbtq-employment-case\/index.html\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gorsuch<\/a> in the decision, while Samuel Alito, Brett Kavanaugh, and Clarence Thomas <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/ef3c19a79b65c060fd9e82b9dd87a1d9\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dissented<\/a>.
