Comments on: Housing developer reminded universities about project debt as they mulled fall plans https://pappp.net/?p=27188 Hacking, Geekery, and life in Academia. Fri, 07 Aug 2020 16:14:18 +0000 hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.5 By: Frank https://pappp.net/?p=27188#comment-623373 Fri, 07 Aug 2020 16:14:18 +0000 http://pappp.net/?guid=8d8ee28ffab0434d92c4a845be8d73dd#comment-623373 So not only are we spending way too much on parts of higher education, that spending is highly leveraged. Furthermore, it’s not clear that leverage will continue to be justified:

“… the number of students opting out of campus housing made it unnecessary for us to implement our plan. Over the last two months, many students have cancelled housing contracts. We continue to move students off our wait list, and yet we are certain to open at much lower density because of attrition.”

How many of these students do we suppose will come back to the dorms in the future once they realize off-campus housing is both cheaper and possible better? This could be a real problem. I would not be surprised to see this lead to widespread requirements that students live on campus as underclassmen.

“Limiting occupancy of on-campus student housing won’t benefit students or the university at large, the letters added. Displaced students would be forced to live off campus, likely paying more…”

What world are these people living in? Has university housing has gotten cheaper, or campus-adjacent housing gotten much more expensive?

One thing is for sure – this pandemic is revealing who is managing their debt responsibly and who is not.
